John Pitseys is a Visiting Lecturer at the Catholic University of Louvain (2012-present), the School of Advanced Commercial Studies/EDHEC (2015-present), and the University of Namur (2016-present). He serves as a Researcher at the Centre for Socio-Political Research and Information (CRISP) and is affiliated with the Hoover Chair of Economic and Social Ethics at UCLouvain. His scholarly work critically examines the intersections of law, politics, and democratic theory.
Dr. Pitseys earned his Doctorate in Philosophy and Letters from the Université catholique de Louvain in 2009, with his dissertation focusing on 'Transparency and democracy. Analysis of a principle of government.'
His research spans philosophy and theory of law, political philosophy, and democratic theory. Key interests include the theory of democracy, transformations of legal regulation, European governance, parliamentary law, deliberation and political publicity, and fundamental rights. His work critically examines how transparency, representation, and visibility function within democratic systems, often exploring tensions between theoretical ideals and practical political realities.
His recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on democratic theory and political representation, with significant attention to European governance structures and the philosophical implications of transparency. He frequently bridges theoretical political philosophy with practical governance challenges, analyzing topics ranging from neoliberal utopias to cinematic representations of political concepts. His work shows particular expertise in analyzing contemporary Belgian political institutions within broader European frameworks.
As a researcher at CRISP, Pitseys engages in public and political action research, develops training activities, and makes frequent public interventions on the Belgian institutional system. He regularly serves as a media commentator on political reference files, contributing op-eds and analyses on current events through publications like Politique, Chronique des Droits de l'Homme, and Imagine.
His academic work is closely associated with the Hoover Chair of Economic and Social Ethics at UCLouvain, which hosts numerous seminars including the long-running 'Midis de l'éthique' (since 1991), 'Mardis intimes' (since 1998), and various international collaborations such as 'Disputationes' with Leuven & Leiden and 'Northern Lights' with Aarhus.
