John B. Parise is a Distinguished Professor at Stony Brook University, Department of Geosciences, with a focus on materials synthesis and structural characterization under extreme conditions. He has been a faculty member since 1989 and leads the U.S. Department of Energy’s GENESIS Energy Frontier Research Center (EFRC), which explores synthesis science to control reaction pathways in materials. His research emphasizes understanding atomic-scale structural changes in disordered materials like molten uranium dioxide (UO₂), iron silicate melts, and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for energy applications.
Education: B.Sc. and Ph.D. in Geology from James Cook University (1977, 1981). Postdoctoral roles include Visiting Scientist at E.I. DuPont and Lecturer at the University of Sydney. His work combines high-energy X-ray diffraction, neutron scattering, and computational modeling, leveraging facilities like the Advanced Photon Source (APS) and National Synchrotron Light Source-II (NSLS-II).
Research Interests: Structural behavior of materials under extreme conditions (e.g., high temperature, pressure, radiation); synthesis of energy-related materials (e.g., nuclear fuel, photocatalysts); and environmental applications (e.g., CO₂ capture using MOFs). His group’s projects include studying UO₂ melt structure for nuclear safety, Fe₂SiO₄+x melts under varying oxygen fugacity, and iodine adsorption in MOFs.
Collaborations: Partnerships with national labs (ANL, BNL, ORNL) and industry. Active in planetary science, analyzing Martian mineral phases using spectroscopic techniques. His work bridges fundamental science and applied energy solutions, emphasizing in situ experimental methods and high-throughput data analysis.
