John Palmer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political and Social Sciences at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) in Barcelona, Spain. He holds a PhD in Public Affairs from Princeton University and a JD with specialization in international and comparative law from Cornell Law School. As a member of both the Sociodemography Research Group (DemoSoc) and the Interdisciplinary Research Group on Immigration (GRITIM), he bridges multiple disciplines in his work.
His research focuses on the intersection of human mobility, social segregation, disease ecology, and public policy. Palmer is particularly known for his work on mosquito-borne diseases through citizen science approaches, serving as co-director of Mosquito Alert, a system that engages the public in tracking disease-vector mosquitoes. His work spans demography, migration studies, law, and spatial analysis, with particular emphasis on how human movement patterns interact with ecological systems.
Palmer's recent publications reveal a strong focus on mosquito surveillance, vector-borne disease prevention, and citizen science methodologies. His research spans public health, entomology, spatial analysis, and climate change adaptation, with numerous publications in high-impact journals including The Lancet, Nature Communications, and Scientific Reports. His work demonstrates consistent integration of demographic, ecological, and policy perspectives to address emerging public health challenges.
He is actively involved in multiple research projects including the Human-Mosquito Interaction Project, Planet4Health, E4Warning, IDAlert, AlgorithmLaw, and iConsumers, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of his work that spans public health, environmental science, law, and technology.
As an educator, Palmer teaches Data Mapping for Marketing in the Bachelor's Degree in International Business and Marketing program, as well as Techniques of Statistical Analysis I and Theories of International Mobility and the Incorporation of Immigrants in UPF's master's programs. His teaching reflects his expertise in spatial analysis, migration studies, and research methods.
Palmer is also an active participant in social justice causes, particularly advocating for Palestinian rights, as evidenced by his social media presence where he regularly shares information about Gaza and calls for action to end the Israeli occupation.
