John O'Sullivan

John O'Sullivan is a Professor at the Institute for Environmental & Spatial Analysis (IESA) within the University of North Georgia. He has been instrumental in establishing the environmental studies program at IESA and has over 20 years of involvement in the environmental movement. Prior to his current role, he taught social theory, human ecology, and environmental sociology at Delta State University and the University of North Carolina during his doctoral studies. Dr. O'Sullivan has held diverse roles, including psychometrist, counselor, and director of a college counseling center, across locations such as Gainesville, Greensboro NC, Boston MA, Kinderhook NY, and Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Dr. O'Sullivan holds a Ph.D. in Social Foundations, Cultural Studies & Sociology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (1997), an Ed.S. in Guidance & Counseling, and a M.A. and B.A. in Psychology, all from West Georgia College (1993, 1992, 1990). He also earned an A.S. in Criminal Justice from West Georgia College in 1987.

His research focuses on environmental challenges (climate change, pollution, sustainable energy), cultural dynamics (demographic trends, cognitive problems of science, shifting values), and sociological frameworks for social change and education. He is committed to eco-literacy, democratic problem-solving structures, and fostering sustainability through interdisciplinary approaches.

In advising and grants, Dr. O'Sullivan has pioneered environmental studies curricula and contributed to grants like the GEOPAths Grant and initiatives in geospatial technology. He emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration and community engagement in environmental education, reflected in programs like the GIS Competition and National Intelligence Summer Academy.

Dr. O'Sullivan resides in Gainesville with his wife and actively engages in travel, reading, swimming, and connecting with diverse communities.
