John O'Brien is a Lecturer in the School of Law at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), within the Faculty of Business & Law. He teaches foundational legal units in the Bachelor of Laws (Hons) program and an elective in Sports Law. His research focuses on sports law, education law, and statutory interpretation, particularly regarding compulsory schooling regulations. O'Brien holds a LLB (Hons) and BCom (Hons) from Griffith University, and a GradDipEd(Sec) from Australian Catholic University.
He has held roles such as Academic Lead for Student Experience & Wellbeing since 2016, overseeing initiatives like orientation programs and wellness programs (weLLBeing). Externally, he serves on the Queensland Chapter of ANZELA and a national board, and volunteers in sports disciplinary tribunals.
Research interests span legal issues in education and sport, with a comparative analysis of compulsory schooling regulations in Australia. His articles explore topics like doping regulations in sports, truancy laws, and statutory interpretation challenges. He coordinates LLB101 Introduction to Law and teaches LLB245 Sports Law.
