John Nietfeld is a Professor in the Department of Teacher Education and Learning Sciences at North Carolina State University's College of Education. His research centers on self-regulated learning (SRL), metacognition, and game-based learning environments. He leads the development of 'Missions with Monty,' a game-based program improving science and reading comprehension for multilingual students, funded by the William T. Grant Foundation ($599,413).
His educational background includes a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology (University of Nebraska), an M.A. in Educational Psychology (University of Iowa), and a B.A. in Psychology (Eastern Illinois University).
Nietfeld's research integrates metacognitive training with game design to enhance learning efficiency. Key interests include:
- Self-regulated learning in digital contexts
- Metacognitive monitoring accuracy
- Motivational dynamics in game-based environments
- Cross-disciplinary applications for science education
His recent articles (2011–2021) focus on predictive modeling of learning transfer, motivational trace data, and metacognitive scaffolding. Predominant themes include game-based learning efficacy, self-regulation measurement, and cross-cultural cognitive studies.
Awards:
- 2016 Fulbright Core Teaching and Research Scholar Award (Estonia)
Grants & Advising: Nietfeld secured NSF funding (#0822200) for game-based learning research and collaborates on multilingual education projects with Maria Coady. He advises on metacognitive strategy implementation in K-12 and higher education.
Labs/Teams: Leads research on the 'Missions with Monty' platform, examining SRL scaffolding in science education. Collaborates internationally (e.g., Czech Republic) for cross-cultural validation.
