John Morton, MD, MPH, MHA, is a Professor of Surgery at the Yale School of Medicine, serving as Vice-Chair of Surgical Quality and Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery for the Yale New Haven Health System. He leads the Digestive Health Service Line and chairs the Perioperative Services Quality Committee. With over 18 years of experience in bariatric surgery, he is a global leader in metabolic and bariatric surgery, focusing on quality improvement and patient outcomes. Dr. Morton has held national leadership roles, including President of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and Chair of the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP).
Dr. Morton’s education includes a BS in Biology and dual degrees in Medicine and Public Health from Tulane University, followed by a Master’s in Health Administration from the University of Washington. His career highlights include pioneering work on the ‘halo effect’ of bariatric surgery, demonstrating its impact on family health, and leading FDA pivotal trials. He has authored over 173 articles and edited five books, including the ASMBS Textbook of Bariatric Surgery.
His research emphasizes obesity treatment, surgical quality, and metabolic outcomes. Notable contributions include studies on opioid reduction post-surgery, preoperative phentermine use, and the long-term effects of bariatric procedures. He has received 28 research awards and multiple honors, including the Walter Pories Award and ASMBS Lifetime Achievement Award.
Dr. Morton advocates for multidisciplinary weight-loss programs, integrating lifestyle, medications, and surgery. He is committed to advancing healthcare equity and improving surgical standards through MBSAQIP and other initiatives.
