John Michael holds the John Hall Deane Professorship of Rhetoric and Poetry, and serves as Professor of English and Professor of Visual and Cultural Studies at the University of Rochester. As Director of American Studies, he bridges literary and interdisciplinary scholarship. He earned his PhD from The Johns Hopkins University and has held distinguished fellowships including the Presidential Fellow at Salzburg Seminars and a Fulbright Lecturing Award in Poland.
His research focuses on U.S. and diasporic literatures, global contexts of national literatures, translation studies, and critiques of contemporary humanities. Key areas include critical theory, cultural studies, and the interplay between academic intellectualism and public politics.
Publications span 40 years, addressing themes like secular lyric theory, global literary connections, and identity in political contexts. Recent work explores Amitav Ghosh’s oceanic narratives and the modernization of 19th-century American poetry. Upcoming projects include a study on modern poetry in 19th-century America.
