Professor John McLeod serves as Professor of Postcolonial and Diaspora Literatures at the School of English, Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures, University of Leeds. He has been a prominent figure in postcolonial studies since returning to Leeds in 1996, where he was promoted to Professor in May 2010. His international academic presence is evidenced by numerous visiting positions including at the University of Utrecht (2009), Washington University in St Louis (2014), Nanyang Technological University (2019), and University of Paris-Sorbonne (2022).
McLeod's research focuses on postcolonial studies with particular interests in transcultural adoption writing and representations of migrant and diasporic cultures. His recent monograph Global Trespassers: Sanctioned Mobility in Contemporary Culture (2024) explores representations of minoritized migrant figures in the Global North. His scholarly profile is further defined by his interest in post-war and contemporary British fiction, particularly examining how London has been reimagined by postcolonial writers.
His 15 most recent publications reveal a consistent trajectory exploring adoption narratives, postcolonial London, and contemporary British cultural production. The publications demonstrate increasing focus on adoption studies alongside traditional postcolonial concerns, with significant recent attention to Brexit's cultural implications and ongoing examinations of transcultural kinship formations.
