John McLauchlan is Professor of Viral Hepatitis at the University of Glasgow’s Centre for Virus Research within the School of Infection & Immunity. He leads the McLauchlan Group, which investigates virus-host interactions, RNA virus evolution, and transmission dynamics, focusing on hepatitis C virus (HCV) and dengue virus (DENV). His research addresses four key areas: host factors limiting HCV replication, HCV strain responses to direct-acting antivirals, UK transmission hubs through HCV Research UK, and high-throughput sequencing diagnostics for DENV.
McLauchlan’s research integrates virology, immunology, and epidemiology to study viral persistence and pathogenesis. His work on HCV explores mechanisms of chronic infection leading to liver disease, while DENV research focuses on biomarker discovery for severe disease prediction. Collaborative projects span multiple institutions including the University of Bristol, Queens’ University Belfast, and international partners in the Philippines and China.
Recent publications (2019-2023) demonstrate strong focus on antiviral resistance mechanisms, interferon signaling pathways, viral genomics, and real-world treatment outcomes. Research consistently employs cutting-edge genomic techniques and bioinformatics tools like GLUE for viral sequence analysis.
McLauchlan currently advises PhD student Majo Galarion and maintains collaborations with Dr. Ana Filipe (CVR), Prof. Emma Thomson, and international researchers. He established HCV Research UK, a national clinical database and biobank funded by the Medical Research Foundation. The group operates within the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research infrastructure.
