John McGarry is the Stephen Gyimah Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Political Studies at Queen's University, Canada. He specializes in conflict resolution, federalism, and power-sharing mechanisms in deeply divided societies such as Cyprus, Iraq, and Northern Ireland. His work has significantly influenced public policy and international mediation efforts, including advising the UN on power-sharing in Cyprus.
Education:
- PhD and MA from Western University
- BA from Trinity College, Dublin
Research Interests: McGarry’s research focuses on the design of political institutions to manage ethnic and national conflicts. He emphasizes power-sharing, constitutional engineering, and the role of international mediation in conflict resolution. His work bridges theoretical analysis with practical policy impact, particularly in post-conflict regions.
