John McColley serves as Adjunct Professor of Harp at University of South Florida's School of Music (joining Fall 2024), while maintaining adjunct positions at University of Tampa and Hillsborough Community College. He directs the nationally recognized Hillsborough County Public Schools Harp Program (grades 4-12) and performs as principal harpist with St. Petersburg Opera Company and Florida Wind Band.
His academic credentials include:
- Bachelor of Music in Harp Performance from Baldwin Wallace University's Conservatory of Music (studied with Jody Guinn of The Cleveland Orchestra)
- Master of Music in Harp Performance and Pedagogy from University of Colorado Boulder (studied with Janet Harriman of Opera Colorado)
McColley's artistic focus centers on 20th/21st century chamber music, where he is recognized as an authority on Flute-Harp-Viola trio repertoire. As Principal Harpist of the Reflections Chamber Ensemble, he champions contemporary works through commissions, premieres, and performances. His Barefoot Trio has been featured by The World Harp Congress for innovative programming.
Through his leadership of Hillsborough County's model public school harp program and active performance career, McColley bridges academic instruction, professional performance, and community engagement. His memberships in the World Harp Congress, American Harp Society, and Florida Music Educators Association reflect his commitment to advancing harp pedagogy and contemporary repertoire.
