John Makaran is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Western University's Faculty of Engineering. He holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering (2002), an M.E.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering (1990), and a B.E.Sc. in Electrical Engineering (1987), all from Western University.

With over 30 years of industry experience spanning automotive engineering, product development, and quality management, Dr. Makaran's research focuses on Automotive Engineering, Electronics Integration in mechanical systems, Materials Science, and Product Validation. His expertise includes designing the world's first brushless motor for automotive engine cooling applications. His career bridges significant industrial contributions with academic instruction at both Western University and the University of Toronto's M.Eng. program.
Dr. Makaran has served as a consultant for major automotive suppliers including Magna International, Siemens VDO Automotive, and General Dynamics Land Systems Canada. He has also acted as an expert witness in automotive sector legal cases for Warner Norcross and Judd LLP, demonstrating applied technical expertise across industry-academia boundaries.
