John Major Eason is an Associate Professor of Sociology and International and Public Affairs at Brown University, affiliated with the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and has a background in community organizing, including work with Barack Obama. His research focuses on prison proliferation, rural-urban disparities, and the intersection of punishment and social inequality, as detailed in his book Big House on the Prairie. Recent work explores prison closures, carceral capacity, and health disparities linked to incarceration. He leads the Justice Policy Lab at Brown and has been named the William H. Neukom Fellows Research Chair in Diversity and Law (2024). His research is supported by grants from the National Science Foundation.
