John Eason is the Watson Family University Associate Professor of Sociology and International and Public Affairs at Brown University. He is also a Senior Research Fellow at the Urban Institute’s Justice Policy Center and Office of Race and Equity Research, leading projects on reducing prisons in rural communities of color. His work focuses on the intersection of punishment, race, urban/rural dynamics, and the U.S. South. Eason holds a PhD and MPP from the University of Chicago. His research combines ethnography and quantitative methods to address criminal justice reform, prison proliferation, and public health within carceral systems. Notable contributions include the book *Big House on the Prairie* and studies on carceral capacity, rural prison impacts, and health disparities linked to incarceration. He directs Brown’s Justice Policy Lab and teaches courses on prison abolition and urban sociology.
