John Maerz

Dr. John Maerz is the Dennis and Sarah Carey Distinguished Professor of Forestry and Natural Resources and Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Georgia's Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. He holds an adjunct position in the Odum School of Ecology and is affiliated with the Center for Integrative Conservation and Animal Behavior Integrative Life Sciences Group. With a B.Sc. from the University of Maryland and a Ph.D. from SUNY Binghamton, his career spans research at Cornell University and roles in conservation organizations like the IUCN Amphibian Specialist Group.

His research focuses on vertebrate ecology, particularly amphibians and reptiles, addressing environmental change impacts, invasive species, and conservation strategies. Key areas include salamander population dynamics, climate effects on wildlife, and ecosystem process interactions. Teaching includes courses in Animal Behavior, Herpetology, and Applied Wildlife Management, supported by awards like the 2017 Josiah Meigs Teaching Professorship.

Dr. Maerz leads the Herpetology Laboratory, studying amphibian and reptile ecology across multiple U.S. states and Honduras. His work integrates field studies, modeling, and conservation planning, emphasizing practical solutions for endangered species. Notable projects include Coweeta LTER collaborations and road mortality mitigation for diamondback terrapins.

Scientific contributions highlight innovative methods in population monitoring, invasion biology, and climate adaptation. Awards include UGA's Early Career Excellence in Research (2010) and Russell Teaching Award (2011).
