John MacDonald is a Professor of Criminology and Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania, serving as Graduate Director for the Department of Criminology. He holds a Ph.D. in Criminology from the University of Maryland (1999). His research focuses on interpersonal violence, racial disparities in criminal justice, and policy impacts on crime reduction. Notable work includes studies on fatal police shootings, body-worn cameras, urban development, and abandoned housing interventions. He regularly teaches advanced sociology courses (Sociology 200, 600, 601).
His research spans experimental evaluations of policing strategies, policy reforms, and built-environment influences on crime. Recent studies highlight the role of land use, housing remediation, and technology in reducing violence and improving community safety.
