John M. MacDonald is a Professor of Criminology and Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Arts and Sciences. He also serves as Director of the Master of Science in Criminology program, focusing on crime and violence, racial disparities in criminal justice, and the intersection of public policy and urban safety.
- Education: Ph.D. in Criminology from the University of Maryland (1999).
His research explores how urban planning strategies, such as greening vacant lots, can reduce crime and violence while addressing systemic racial disparities in criminal justice systems. His work is supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and private foundations.
MacDonald has launched the nation’s first Master’s Program in Applied Criminology and Police Leadership (2024) and collaborates with the Philadelphia Police Department on initiatives to improve public safety and community health.
