His research interests include 18th- and 19th-century U.S. literature, American studies, and the application of critical theory to historical texts. His work analyzes how literature serves as a medium for resistance, revolution, and social change, particularly through themes of enthusiasm, dissent, and utopian thought.
Kilgore has taught a wide range of courses, including seminars on early American poetry, the Civil War era, affect theory, and the critique of racial capitalism. His courses often integrate digital humanities methods and interdisciplinary theory.
His publications explore topics such as anti-capitalist narratives in early republic texts, the role of literature in public memory, and the intersection of political economy with literary form.
