John M. Gardner

John M. Gardner is a Professor of Spanish at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, specializing in Medieval and Golden Age Spanish literature, Spanish culture, and Galician literature. He holds a PhD from the University of Colorado (2001), following an MA from the University of Kansas (1988) and a BA from the University of Nebraska (1984). His research explores intersections of literature, art, and culture, including studies on rural Dominican sign painting and cinematic influences in Spanish narratives. He actively co-advises Engineers Without Borders, leading international service projects. Dr. Gardner has received awards for his academic advising and service, including the 2011 Outstanding Organization Advisor and Member of the Year honors.

His teaching focuses on Spanish language, literature, and culture. Notable research contributions include analyses of postmodern road narratives, visual art interactions with text, and medieval religious poetry. His work bridges literary criticism with cultural anthropology, emphasizing preservation of traditional art forms threatened by digitization.
