John M. Dixon is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the College of Staten Island, City University of New York (CUNY), and also teaches at the CUNY Graduate Center. He joined the faculty in 2009 and was appointed Chair of the History Department in 2024. He holds a Ph.D. in American History from the University of California, Los Angeles (2007), an M.A. from the University of East Anglia, and a B.A. from the University of Birmingham.

His research focuses on early American and Atlantic world history, with particular emphasis on intellectual and cultural history, early American Jewish history, the Enlightenment, and New York history. He regularly teaches courses on the history of America before 1865, New York history, American thought and culture, and historiography.
Dixon’s recent scholarship explores the intersections of Jewish identity, empire, and Atlantic networks. His publications, including articles in American Jewish History and Early American Literature, analyze themes such as Jewish emancipation, colonial Jewish communities, and the intellectual legacy of figures like Cadwallader Colden. His 2016 book, The Enlightenment of Cadwallader Colden, won the Herbert H. Lehman Prize for Distinguished Scholarship.

John M. Dixon advises students and is currently working on a survey history of Jews, empires, and the early Americas. He is affiliated with the academic community through editorial work, including serving as a former Associate Editor of the Marcus Garvey and UNIA Papers.
He is actively engaged in research and publication, with recent works contributing to evolving paradigms in early American Jewish and Atlantic history.
