Dr. John M. Ballato is the J. E. Sirrine Textile Foundation Endowed Chair of Optical Fibers and Professor at Clemson University’s Department of Materials Science & Engineering. He previously served in leadership roles including COMSET’s founding Director, Clemson’s Vice President for Research (interim), and Vice President for Economic Development. With over $60M in grants and 33 patents, his work spans optical fibers, materials science, and photonics. He earned B.S. (1993) and Ph.D. (1997) in Ceramic/Materials Engineering from Rutgers University.
His research focuses on optical fiber fabrication, rare-earth doped materials, and novel optical materials for high-energy lasers and biomedical applications. He pioneered the Molten Core Method and powder-in-tube fabrication, enabling transformative fiber innovations. Ballato has advised over 120 graduate students and taught 2,000+ undergraduates.
Ballato’s honors include Fellowships from ACerS, SPIE, OSA, IEEE, and AAAS, plus the Class of ’39 Award (2014) and South Carolina Governor’s Scientific Research Award (2014). He leads the Advanced Materials Research Laboratory and co-founded two technology firms. His global impact includes recruiting companies to South Carolina and fostering a thriving photonics industry through the Carolinas Photonics Consortium.
His publications emphasize material innovation, fiber design, and light-matter interactions, with key contributions to Anderson localization, silicon-core fibers, and infrared optics. Ballato’s legacy combines academic leadership, commercialization, and mentorship, driving both scientific and economic progress.
