John Lane, DMA, is a Professor of Percussion and Director of Percussion Studies at Sam Houston State University’s School of Music. He has previously taught at the University of Wyoming and held fellowships at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and the University of North Texas. His work spans percussion, poetry/spoken word, theater, and interdisciplinary collaborations, often addressing socio-political themes. As a performer, he has appeared globally, including at the Rothko Chapel, Hokuto International Music Festival, and the Antarctica Music Festival. He is the creator of the podcast Standing in the Stream: Conversations with Creatives, exploring artists’ creative lives.

Lane’s research and creative work focuses on interdisciplinary collaborations, social justice advocacy (e.g., The Innocents project on wrongful imprisonment), and integrating technology with artistic expression. He co-hosted the Percussive Arts Society’s New Music Research Focus Day in 2014 and is active in commissioning new works. His podcast examines intersections of art, politics, and sustainability in creative careers.
Lane is a Yamaha Performing Artist and collaborates with brands like Innovative Percussion, Evans Drumheads, and Zildjian Cymbals. He has released two albums: The Landscape Scrolls (Starkland Records) and Trigger: Artists Respond to Gun Violence (Albany Records). His collaborations include poets Nick Lantz and Dean Rader, composer John Luther Adams, and visual artists Edward Morin and Pat Alexander.
