John Kress

John Kress is a Professor in the Department of Medicine-Pulmonary and Critical Care at the University of Chicago. He serves as Director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), Procedure Service, and the Pulmonary/Critical Care Fellowship Program. His research focuses on improving outcomes for ICU patients, particularly in sedation management during mechanical ventilation and post-ICU rehabilitation.

Education: BS (University of Notre Dame, 1987), MD (St. Louis University School of Medicine, 1991), Residencies in Anesthesiology (1995) and Internal Medicine (1996), and a Fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine (1999), all at the University of Chicago.

Research interests include optimizing sedation protocols, reducing ICU-acquired weakness, and advancing mobility interventions. He has led major studies such as the Awakening and Breathing Controlled (ABC) trial on daily sedation interruption. His work has influenced clinical guidelines on ICU sedation, delirium management, and ventilator liberation.

Awards include the Phi Beta Kappa (1987), Alpha Omega Alpha (1997), and multiple teaching awards from the University of Chicago. He is a Senior Faculty Scholar in the Bucksbaum Institute for Clinical Excellence (2014).

Key grants include NIH K23GM063906 (2002–2006) on sedation outcomes improvement strategies. Over 250 publications span critical care, pulmonology, and translational research, emphasizing patient-centered outcomes and evidence-based practices.
