John Kelly is an Adjunct Clinical Professor in the Department of Medicine at Monash University and a consultant dermatologist at the Victorian Melanoma Service at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. He founded the multidisciplinary Victorian Melanoma Service in 1994 and led it until 2018, and previously headed the hospital's Dermatology Unit from 1987-2005.
His educational background includes doctoral research at the Melanoma Clinic, University of California, San Francisco, focused on melanoma diagnosis and management. This foundation underpins his extensive clinical and research career.
Professor Kelly's research centers on advancing melanoma diagnosis through digital imaging and artificial intelligence. His work develops innovative protocols for sequential dermoscopy, total body photography, and AI-assisted analysis to improve early detection in high-risk patients. Current projects address critical gaps in sex-specific anatomical distribution patterns and surveillance imaging efficacy for post-resection monitoring.
Recent publications reveal a strong trend toward integrating artificial intelligence with traditional dermatological methods, particularly in real-world clinical settings. His team's work establishes evidence for AI diagnostic aids while exploring nuanced factors like anatomical distribution differences in lentiginous melanoma subtypes.
Major recognitions include:
- Member of the Order of Australia (AM) 2018 for service to melanoma management and medical education
- Belisario Award for Academic Dermatology (Australasian College of Dermatologists) 2018
He actively leads significant research initiatives as Chief Investigator:
- NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Melanoma (2017-2022)
- Department of Health project on Melanoma Surveillance Photography accuracy (2019-2025)
- NHMRC trial methodology enhancement project (2017-2021)
Professor Kelly remains integral to the Victorian Melanoma Service multidisciplinary team and contributes to national guidelines through the Australia and New Zealand Melanoma Trials Group and Clinical Practice Guidelines steering committee.
