John Kelley is an Associate Research Professor in the Department of Physics at North Carolina State University (NCSU), within the College of Sciences. Prior to joining NCSU in 2000, he held roles at the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) and conducted research at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) and the Grand Accelerateur National d Ions Lourds (GANIL) in France. His research focuses on nuclear physics, particularly the spatial extent of nuclear halos in light nuclei and evaluations of nuclear data for astrophysical applications.
He earned his PhD in 1995 from Michigan State University (MSU), where he conducted research at NSCL. In 1995–1996, he was supported by the French Minister of Foreign Affairs for a scientific stay at the Institut de Physique Nucléaire Orsay. His expertise includes rare isotope beams, nuclear structure, and connecting experimental data to stellar processes.
Research Interests: Dr. Kelley’s work spans nuclear physics, nuclear structure, and nuclear astrophysics. He evaluates energy levels in light nuclei (e.g., A=3–20) and investigates phenomena like pygmy dipole modes and fission-product yields. His studies address astrophysical questions, such as nucleosynthesis in globular clusters and nova environments.
Publications: His recent work highlights contributions to journals like Nuclear Data Sheets and Physical Review C, as well as conference proceedings. Themes include neutron capture reactions, light-nuclei energy levels, and international collaboration in nuclear data evaluation.
Advising & Grants: While no specific students or grants are listed, Dr. Kelley’s research group evaluates nuclear data, contributing to the Energy Levels of Light Nuclei series. He advises students in his experimental and theoretical research projects.
Labs & Teams: Active in TUNL and NSCL, he collaborates with the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory and international facilities like GANIL.
