John K. Young is a Professor of English at Marshall University, where he has been a faculty member since 2000. His work focuses on textual scholarship, particularly the social dimensions of textual production in 20th and 21st-century American, British, and Anglophone literatures.
His educational background includes a B.A. in English from Princeton University, and both M.A. and Ph.D. in English from Northwestern University (1998).
Young's research investigates how social and cultural systems shape texts through documentary traces such as drafts, manuscripts, and advertisements. He is particularly known for his work on African American literature, race, and textual history, with major projects including studies of Jean Toomer's Cane and W.E.B. Du Bois's concept of double consciousness applied to Black literature. His scholarship bridges the material and immaterial aspects of books, exploring the "outside" (social context) and "inside" (textual content) of literary works.
His recent publications reveal a sustained focus on the production histories of modernist and postmodernist literature, with an emphasis on African American authors and the publishing industry. Young has also edited significant works, including a posthumous poetry collection by Judy Young, demonstrating his commitment to preserving and analyzing literary legacies.
