John Joseph Edwards is a Visiting Instructor in Social Work at the Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research (GSSWSR) at Bryn Mawr College. His academic affiliations include Bryn Mawr College, where he also serves as a PhD candidate in the GSSWSR. He has held roles in legal and social work settings, including work at the Cook County State's Attorney's Office and Catholic Charities of Chicago.
John holds an A.B. from the University of Chicago, a J.D. from Howard University, an M.S.S. from Bryn Mawr College, and is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the same institution.
His research focuses on HIV/STI prevention, mental health disorders (mood and anxiety) within LGBTQ communities, substance abuse treatment, social work education and practicum placements, and the intersection of social work and law. He is particularly committed to addressing health disparities in marginalized communities and improving social work training practices.
He has received several prestigious awards, including the Shahbanu Goldberg Award, the Patricia Burland Award for Best Clinical Case Essay, the McPherson Award for Excellence, and the L. Diane Bernard Award for LGBT and Human Sexuality Projects.
John has been involved in various initiatives, including a SAMHSA-funded intervention at Mazzoni Center targeting high-risk groups for substance abuse and HIV. He has also worked as a case manager and wellness coordinator at Synergy Houses. His teaching includes courses on Foundation Practice, Research Informed Practice, and Power, Privilege, and Oppression.
He contributes to professional organizations such as the Council on Social Work Education’s Council on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Expression, advocating for inclusive practices in social work education.
