John J. Stuhr is the Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and American Studies at Emory University. He holds a BA from Carleton College, MA and PhD from Vanderbilt University. His research focuses on pragmatism, ethics, political philosophy, and 19th/20th-century European philosophy. Stuhr directs the American Philosophies Forum and serves as Co-Editor of the Journal of Speculative Philosophy. He has received grants including the Templeton Foundation Grant (2017–2023) and a Fulbright Fellowship (1984).
His current projects include books on Peirce’s pragmatism, Dewey’s philosophy of experience, and a Very Short Introduction to American philosophy. Stuhr’s work bridges pragmatism with postmodernism, addressing contemporary issues like authoritarianism and environmental justice. His teaching spans undergraduate and graduate courses on pragmatism, Deleuze, and political theory.
Notable honors include the Greenlee Prize (1981) and roles as President of the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy (2004–06). He has organized international conferences and collaborates with institutions globally, including Università degli Studi di Milano and the Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania.
Stuhr’s publications span monographs, edited volumes, and over 50 articles. His grants include the Marcus Foundation (2008, 2014) and NEH funding (2001). He advises no listed students but mentors through seminars and conferences, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue between academia and public sectors.
