Casey Haskins serves as Associate Professor of Philosophy in the Department of Philosophy within the School of Humanities at Purchase College, State University of New York. His teaching encompasses aesthetics (particularly music and film), ethics, environmental philosophy, and nineteenth century German philosophy.
His academic background includes a BA from the University of California, Santa Cruz and a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania.
Haskins' research centers on two interconnected domains: the historical evolution of artistic autonomy debates from Kant through postmodernism, and John Dewey's philosophy with emphasis on art and culture. He conceptualizes aesthetics as a transdisciplinary field integrating philosophical aesthetics, fine arts histories, cultural/media studies, and cognitive neuropsychology of creativity. His work critically examines the tension between aesthetic theory and aestheticism, particularly in Dewey's framework.
His publication trajectory reveals consistent engagement with artistic autonomy across eras, demonstrating how historical debates inform contemporary post-anti-aesthetic discourse. Recent contributions increasingly bridge aesthetics with cognitive science while maintaining rigorous attention to Deweyan pragmatism.
His distinguished recognition includes:
- NEH Summer Institute Fellowships (1991, 2002)
- Greenlee Prizes for junior scholarship (1991, 1993)
- New York Institute for the Humanities Visiting Fellowship (1995)
- Princeton University Rockefeller Fellowship (1996-97)
- NEH Enduring Questions grant (2010-11)
- Purchase College Distinguished Professorship (2014-15)
Haskins has secured significant external funding including NEH grants supporting interdisciplinary course development. His editorial work includes co-editing Dewey Reconfigured: Essays on Deweyan Pragmatism (SUNY Press, 1999) and contributing to major reference works like the Encyclopedia of Aesthetics.
