John J. Battles is a Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, affiliated with the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, & Management. His research focuses on forest ecology and ecosystem dynamics, emphasizing quantitative field studies to understand how forests respond to disturbances like wildfires, climate change, and anthropogenic pressures. He leads the Battles Lab, part of the Ecosystem Sciences Research Group, and collaborates with initiatives such as the Sierra Nevada Adaptive Management Project (SNAMP) and the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study.
His work integrates ecological principles with applied management strategies, addressing challenges such as carbon storage, wildfire resilience, and forest restoration. Recent projects include developing tools for ecosystem climate solutions, assessing post-drought forest conditions, and reconstructing historical forest baselines to inform modern management. Battles has advised multiple graduate students and contributed to policy-relevant research, such as California’s Fourth Climate Assessment and the CAL FIRE Forest Health Research Grant on pre-suppression forest carbon baselines.
Research interests span disturbance ecology, silviculture, and climate adaptation, with a focus on Sierra Nevada and Klamath Mountain ecosystems. His lab engages in long-term studies, including the impact of prescribed fires, shaded fuel breaks, and the ecological consequences of land-use changes. Battles also advocates for science-based solutions to environmental challenges, bridging academic research with practical policy and management applications.
