John Houseman served as a Professor at Vassar College’s Department of English from 1937 to 1938. Though his formal appointment was in the English department, his primary focus was directing avant-garde theatrical productions for the Experimental Theatre. He joined Vassar after a controversial stint with the Federal Theatre Project, where his direction of The Cradle Will Rock garnered significant attention. Houseman emphasized professional theater practices, sharing insights from his work with Orson Welles’ Mercury Theatre. Despite initial challenges, he supported students’ theatrical ambitions, arranging discounted access to New York productions and advocating for their creative growth.
His legacy at Vassar includes co-founding the Dutchess County Players with Elizabeth Walling ‘38, a student-run theater initiative sponsored by Vassar President Henry Noble MacCracken and Welles. Houseman’s career extended beyond academia, notably his collaboration with Welles on The War of the Worlds radio broadcast and Citizen Kane, and his later success as an actor, earning a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for his role in The Paper Chase. He also established the Drama Division at Juilliard, where he mentored future stars like Robin Williams.
Houseman’s tenure at Vassar was brief but impactful. He critiqued the lack of social consciousness among some students but remained dedicated to fostering their artistic potential. His departure in 1939 allowed him to focus fully on his Mercury Theatre ventures. Beyond his academic roles, Houseman’s advocacy for theater’s societal role and his interdisciplinary approach left a lasting imprint on educational and artistic communities.
