John Horton Conway (1937-2020) was a British mathematician renowned for his contributions across multiple disciplines. He held the John von Neumann Professorship of Applied and Computational Mathematics at Princeton University, following a career at the University of Cambridge. His work spanned group theory, number theory, geometry, and recreational mathematics, including the invention of the Game of Life and surreal numbers.
Education: B.A. and Ph.D. from Cambridge University (1959 and 1964 respectively). Research focused on finite simple groups (e.g., Conway groups), sphere packing, geometric topology, and quantum foundations through the Free Will Theorem with Kochen. Awards include the Berwick Prize, Polya Prize, and Steele Prize.
His teaching legacy includes mentoring students like Richard Borcherds (Fields Medalist) and William Schneeberger. He was also a prolific author, co-authoring influential texts like Sphere Packing, Lattices, and Groups and posthumously publishing The Triangle Book. His work bridged abstract mathematics with playful exploration, leaving a legacy in both academia and public engagement.
