John Hoppenthaler is a Professor in the English Department at East Carolina University's Harriot College of Arts and Sciences. He holds an M.F.A. from Virginia Commonwealth University, an M.S. from SUNY Brockport, and an A.A. from Rockland Community College. His research focuses on creative writing, contemporary and modern poetry, and American literature.
Major publications include poetry collections like Night Wing over Metropolitan Area (2023), Domestic Garden (2015), and Lives of Water (2003), all from Carnegie Mellon University Press. He co-edited Jean Valentine: This-World Company (2012) and has contributed essays to journals like New York Magazine, Southeast Review, and Kestrel, where he served as Poetry Editor for 11 years.
Hoppenthaler teaches courses ranging from introductory creative writing to advanced poetry workshops and seminars on 20th-century poetry. He has received multiple awards including the Gilbert-Chappell Distinguished Poet designation and the Brockman-Campbell Award for poetry. His work frequently explores political themes, as seen in lectures like 'The Source of Self-Regard' presentation at Chautauqua Institution in 2020.
