John Holmberg is a Professor of Physical Resource Theory at Chalmers University of Technology and holds Sweden’s first UNESCO Chair in Education for Sustainable Development. He has pioneered sustainability education and transition initiatives globally, including founding the world’s first master’s program in Industrial Ecology and the Challenge Lab, which received the GUPES Green Gown Award (2016). His research focuses on sustainability transitions, climate policy, and systemic transformation, with significant contributions to Agenda 2030 implementation.
He has held leadership roles, including Vice President of Chalmers (2007–2016), and advised international bodies like the UN, UNESCO, and EU on sustainability strategies. His work bridges academia, policy, and industry, emphasizing student-led initiatives and transdisciplinary collaboration. Awards include recognition as Sweden’s best teacher in environment and sustainable development.
