Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State Universityمعرفی
John Hole is a Professor of Geophysics at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), affiliated with the Department of Geosciences within the College of Science. He earned his Ph.D. in Geophysics from the University of British Columbia in 1993. His research focuses on exploration seismology of the continental crust, with a particular emphasis on crustal structure, fault zone analysis, and seismic imaging techniques. His work has contributed significantly to understanding active tectonic processes in regions such as the San Andreas Fault zone, Salton Trough, and western Idaho.
Key research interests include continental rifting, seismic velocity modeling, and the application of dense seismic arrays for imaging aftershocks and fault systems. Hole has advised numerous graduate students, including G. D. Beskardes, K. K. Davenport, L. Han, and J. Wu. His publications span over three decades, addressing topics such as crustal deformation, seismic hazard analysis, and the structural evolution of continental margins.
Recent projects include the Salton Seismic Imaging Project (SSIP), which investigates active rifting processes in California, and the EarthScope IDOR project examining deformation in Idaho and Oregon. His research integrates field data from controlled-source seismic surveys, borehole experiments, and dense array deployments. Hole also contributes to geophysical education and outreach, emphasizing the societal relevance of earthquake and tectonic studies.
