Dr John Hallett serves as a Clinical Senior Research Fellow at the Wolfson Wohl Cancer Research Centre within the School of Cancer Sciences at the University of Glasgow, and concurrently holds an honorary Clinical Lecturer position in the School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing. He practices as an honorary consultant paediatric and neonatal surgeon at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow.
His academic training spanned leading UK institutions including the University of Edinburgh, Imperial College London, and the University of Southampton, with specialized focus on paediatric surgery and regenerative medicine.
Hallett's research centers on congenital biliary and liver diseases, particularly investigating etiological mechanisms of conditions like biliary atresia to identify regenerative medicine-based therapeutic targets. His work bridges clinical paediatric surgery with translational research, aiming to develop novel interventions for infant and childhood liver disorders through tissue engineering and cellular therapies.
Current funding includes the NHS Bil-atresia project (NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Endowment Funds, 2025-2027) for developing an in vivo biliary atresia model, and Guts UK Charity support (2025-2026) for complementary biliary disease research.
Based at the Wolfson Wohl Cancer Research Centre, he collaborates with multidisciplinary teams including hepatologists, developmental biologists, and surgical trainees to advance paediatric liver disease therapeutics.
