Professor David Chang is a Professor of Surgical Oncology at the University of Glasgow, specializing in the treatment of malignant pancreatic diseases. Based at the Wolfson Wohl Cancer Research Centre, he serves as an Honorary Consultant Pancreatic Surgeon at Glasgow Royal Infirmary as part of the West of Scotland Pancreatic Unit, a tertiary pancreatic referral center. Chang co-leads Precision-Panc, a pan-UK initiative for personalized cancer care for pancreatic cancer, and is actively involved in major international cancer research initiatives including Precision Promise (Pancreatic Cancer Action Network USA) and ICGC ARGO.
- PhD in Australia
- Pancreatic surgical fellowship in Australia
- Post-doctoral training in Australia
- Recruited to University of Glasgow in 2013
David Chang's primary research focus centers on developing and implementing novel therapeutic strategies for pancreatic cancer, particularly around DNA-damage response deficiency. His work utilizes molecular biomarkers for prognosis and therapeutic responsiveness, with the goal of bridging the gap between bench research and clinical application. Chang is a leading figure in precision medicine approaches for pancreatic cancer treatment, dedicated to shortening the distance between laboratory discoveries and clinical implementation to ensure meaningful and seamless translation between research and patient care.
Chang's recent publications demonstrate a sophisticated integration of molecular biology, genomics, and clinical oncology. His work spans from basic molecular research on DNA damage response mechanisms to large-scale clinical trials through Precision-Panc. Key themes include molecular subtyping of pancreatic cancer, therapeutic resistance mechanisms, novel biomarker discovery, and personalized treatment strategies. The research shows increasing sophistication in combining genomic data with clinical parameters to inform treatment decisions, reflecting the evolution of precision oncology in pancreatic cancer management.
As chief investigator of the Precision-Panc Master Protocol and related clinical trials, Chang leads significant research initiatives with substantial grant funding. His work involves extensive collaboration across the UK and internationally, particularly with the Australian Pancreatic Cancer Genome Initiative. Chang's research program represents a comprehensive approach to pancreatic cancer that integrates basic science, translational research, and clinical implementation.
Based at the Wolfson Wohl Cancer Research Centre at the University of Glasgow, Chang works within a multidisciplinary environment that includes the West of Scotland Pancreatic Unit. His research group collaborates extensively with international teams focused on pancreatic cancer genomics and precision medicine, contributing to major global initiatives that aim to transform pancreatic cancer care through molecular understanding and personalized treatment approaches.
