Professor John Gibson is a Principal Investigator in the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Cambridge, part of the School of Biological Sciences. His research focuses on cellular ion and water homeostasis with particular emphasis on red blood cell permeability in normal conditions and in hemoglobinopathies.
His research interests include:
- Cellular pathophysiology
- Red blood cell physiology
- Ion and water homeostasis
- Sickle cell disease mechanisms
- Membrane permeability
- Phosphatidylserine exposure in red blood cells
Professor Gibson's current research projects investigate altered potassium permeability in sickle cell disease, comparison of different sickle cell genotypes (HbSS, HbSC, HbSS-Oman), mechanisms of phosphatidylserine exposure, genetic and molecular physiology of transport systems like KCl cotransport, and identification of biomarkers for sickle cell nephropathy. His work has significant clinical implications as sickle cell disease affects millions worldwide including 12-15,000 in the UK, yet treatment remains largely symptomatic.
His research is funded by the British Heart Foundation and the Sultanate of Oman. Professor Gibson is available for PhD supervision but does not offer consultancy services.
