Dr. John Gibbs is a Professor of Developmental Psychology in the Department of Psychology at The Ohio State University, part of the College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on cross-cultural sociomoral development, parental socialization, empathy, prosocial behavior, and antisocial behavior. He has developed influential assessment tools like the Sociomoral Reflection Measure and led the EQUIP program, a prevention initiative for adolescents. Gibbs holds a PhD from Harvard University (1972), MA from Harvard (1971), and BA from Princeton (1968).
His research interests include moral judgment measurement, moral identity, and interventions for at-risk youth. Notable contributions include the textbook Moral Development & Reality: Beyond the Theories of Kohlberg, Hoffman, and Haidt (Oxford University Press, 2019) and the Responsible Adult Culture program for offenders. He has been recognized with the Alvis House Golden Rule Award (2006) and multiple teaching nominations.
Awards include the Spotlight on Excellence Award (1998), Ohio Governor’s Council appointment (1995), and Professional Service Awards from the Association for Moral Education (1984, 1983). His work integrates clinical, developmental, and cross-cultural perspectives to address moral behavior and intervention strategies.
