John Gershman is a Clinical Professor of Public Service at New York University's Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. He directs the International Specialization program and co-directs the Capstone Program. As co-founder of the NYU Democracy Project and director of the NYU Democracy Scholars program, he focuses on democratization processes. He also leads the New York Southeast Asia Network and contributes to the Philippine Studies Initiative. His research spans democracy promotion, food security, U.S. foreign policy in Asia, and the political economy of natural resources in Ghana and the Philippines. He has held leadership roles in nonprofit think tanks since the 1990s, including Foreign Policy in Focus.
Expertise includes governance, international development, health policy, and race/class/gender dynamics. He has been recognized for teaching excellence at NYU and maintains active roles in policy analysis and multilateralism studies. His work bridges academic research with practical advocacy, emphasizing rights-based approaches to development.
