John Garner, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor and Philosophy Program Coordinator at the University of West Georgia (UWG). He holds a B.A. in Religion from Florida State University (2005), an M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy from Villanova University (2009, 2014). His primary affiliation is within the School of Humanities, College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. He has been teaching at UWG since 2014, specializing in courses like Ancient Philosophy, Critical Thinking, and Philosophy of Imagination.
Dr. Garner’s research focuses on ancient Greek philosophy, continental philosophy, and the philosophy of religion, with a particular emphasis on imagination, Proclus, and Platonic traditions. His notable works include a book project on Proclus and imagination, translations of Cornelius Castoriadis, and peer-reviewed articles in journals such as The Southern Journal of Philosophy and The Journal of Religion. His current projects explore creative discovery in Neoplatonism and the intersection of perception and the imaginal world.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on existentialism, philosophy of religion, and critical thinking, with syllabi publicly available via UWG’s Concourse platform. He maintains regular office hours and offers virtual meetings upon request. His academic service includes program coordination and editorial contributions to philosophical publications.
