John G. Cannon is an Associate Professor and Program Coordinator for CTE Programs at the University of Idaho's Department of Curriculum and Instruction within the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences. He specializes in Career and Technical Education (CTE), with a focus on teacher certification and professional development. He holds a Ph.D. from Virginia Tech (2005), a Master's from the University of Illinois (1994), and a Bachelor’s in Agriculture from the same institution (1990).
His research emphasizes secondary CTE teacher needs, program management, and instructional design. Notable contributions include studies on administrator perceptions of teacher training and comparisons of traditional vs. alternative certification paths. He received the 2010 Outstanding Beginning Scholar Award for CTE research.
Cannon leads outreach initiatives like the Idaho Professional-Technical Leadership Institute and the PTE New Teacher Workshop. His work bridges academia and practice, supporting CTE educators statewide. He has collaborated on over 15 research projects since 2009, focusing on improving CTE teacher effectiveness and program management strategies.
