John Freeman serves as a Special Lecturer in the Department of Writing and Rhetoric at Oakland University, teaching undergraduate composition and creative writing courses (WRT 1050, 1060, 3086) since 2008. He holds an M.F.A. in poetry from Bowling Green State University and a B.A. in Literature from University of Detroit Mercy.
Research and Teaching Focus: Publishing creatively as "Cal Freeman," he is the author of Brother of Leaving and Fight Songs. His pedagogy, influenced by Paulo Freire and John Dewey, prioritizes student-driven classroom environments where learners define discussion parameters and project formats. Students regularly produce blogs, edit digital videos, share photographic work via Moodle forums, and conduct ethnographic studies of online communities, reflecting his integration of digital literacy into writing education.
