John Frampton is a Professor and Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in Cellular, Biomaterial and Matrix Interaction at Dalhousie University's Frampton Lab. His research focuses on microscale tissue engineering with particular emphasis on neural tissues and development of cost-effective in vitro assay systems using aqueous two-phase technologies.
- Academic Rank: Professor
- Institution: Dalhousie University, Canada
- Research Focus: Cellular engineering, biomaterials, microtechnologies
- Key Innovation: ATPS-based ELISA technology for cross-reaction-free biomarker detection
Dr. Frampton's laboratory develops cutting-edge technologies for tissue engineering, including cell-based assembly of customizable tissue constructs, dynamic hydrogel systems responsive to environmental stimuli, and ATPS-based biopatterning for high-throughput biomolecular assays. These technologies enable the creation of more physiologically relevant in vitro models while significantly reducing assay costs and sample requirements.
His ATPS-ELISA technology has demonstrated particular clinical significance in detecting acute graft versus host disease (GVHD) biomarkers with unprecedented accuracy. This platform allows simultaneous detection of multiple biomarkers (HGF, elafin, ST2 and TNFR1) while eliminating cross-reactions that plague conventional multiplex immunoassays. The technology is compatible with standard laboratory equipment while requiring only ~10μL of plasma for four-plex analysis.
