John F.C. Wardle is a Professor of Astrophysics at Brandeis University's Martin A. Fisher School of Physics. He holds administrative roles including past Chair of the Physics Department (2009–2013 and 1991–1994) and Head of the Division of Science (2014–present). His research focuses on extragalactic radio sources, quasars, and magnetic fields near supermassive black holes, notably via the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration. He earned his PhD from the University of Manchester (1969) and has held visiting positions at institutions like the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and the Institute of Astronomy in Cambridge. Wardle is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and received the Guggenheim Fellowship (1996).
His teaching includes courses such as Introductory Astronomy, Modern Physics, and Astrophysics. Key contributions include pioneering polarization studies of quasars and leading observational efforts with the Very Long Baseline Array. Supervised PhD students have pursued careers in academia, industry, and research institutions worldwide. Wardle’s work bridges theoretical and observational astrophysics, emphasizing high-resolution radio imaging and relativistic jet dynamics.
