معرفی
John F. Cryan is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Anatomy & Neuroscience at University College Cork (UCC), and serves as Vice President for Research & Innovation. He is a Principal Investigator at the APC Microbiome Institute and leads a large, multidisciplinary research group focused on the gut-brain axis.
Education:
- B.Sc. (Hons) in Biochemistry, National University of Ireland, Galway
- PhD in Pharmacology, National University of Ireland, Galway
- Postdoctoral Fellow, University of Pennsylvania, USA
- Postdoctoral Fellow, The Scripps Research Institute, USA
- Visiting Fellow, University of Melbourne, Australia
His research centers on the neurobiological basis of stress-related disorders, including depression, anxiety, and addiction, with a particular emphasis on the role of the gut microbiome. His work spans neurodevelopment, psychiatric disorders, and immune interactions, using animal models and clinical studies to explore the microbiota-gut-brain axis. He has co-authored influential books such as The Psychobiotic Revolution and has published over 600 scientific articles.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong focus on the impact of diet, microbiota, and early-life interventions on brain function and behavior. Key themes include the role of prebiotics, psychobiotics, and dietary components in modulating cognition, stress resilience, and neurodevelopmental outcomes. His research integrates molecular neuroscience, behavioral phenotyping, and microbiome analysis.
Scientific Awards and Honors:
- UCC Researcher of the Year (2012)
- University of Utrecht Award for Excellence in Pharmaceutical Research (2013)
- Research Mentor Award, American Gastroenterology Association (2017)
- Tom Connor Distinguished Scientist Award, Neuroscience Ireland (2017)
- Datta Prize, FASEB (2022)
- Highly Cited Researcher (Clarivate Analytics, 2017–present)
- Elected Member, Royal Irish Academy (2017)
- Honorary Degree, University of Antwerp (2018)
- Past-President, European Behavioural Pharmacology Society
- TEDMED Speaker (2014)
Prof. Cryan has mentored numerous PhD students and postdoctoral fellows and has secured significant funding from Science Foundation Ireland, the Health Research Board, Enterprise Ireland, Irish Research Council, and EU Framework 7 Programme. He is a Senior Editor of Neuropharmacology and Neurobiology of Stress, and serves on the editorial boards of 15 journals.
He leads a research group of over 30 members, including postdoctoral fellows, PhD students, and research scientists, fostering a collaborative environment at the APC Microbiome Institute. His team investigates mechanisms linking gut microbiota to brain function, with implications for mental health, neurodevelopment, and chronic disease.
