John Estes is an Associate Professor and Director of Creative Writing in the Department of English at the University of Alabama. His academic career focuses on poetics, ecological literature, and creative writing pedagogy. He holds a PhD from the University of Missouri, specializing in interdisciplinary literary studies.
His research interests span Creative Writing, Literature (with emphases on American, British, and Postcolonial traditions), Composition & Rhetoric, Digital Humanities, and Critical Theory. He actively explores intersections between environmental themes and literary forms.
Estes has authored three poetry collections including the award-winning Sure Extinction (2015 Antivenom Award) and two chapbooks, including a 2008 National Chapbook Fellowship recipient. His forthcoming works include Stop Motion Still Life and a short fiction collection The Irrelevant Self.
He leads the Creative Writing program at UA, fostering student innovation through workshops and mentorship. His academic service includes roles in the Strode Program and TESOL initiatives.
