Dr John Easton is a Lecturer in the Department of Electronic, Electrical and Systems Engineering at the University of Birmingham, where he is affiliated with the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education (BCRRE). He leads research activities in data integration, management, and cyber security within the UK Rail Research and Innovation Network’s (UKRRIN) Centre of Excellence in Digital Systems.
- PhD in “Optimised analysis and visualisation of metabolic data using graph theoretical approaches” – University of Birmingham (2009)
- MEng (Hons) in Computer Systems Engineering with Management – University of Birmingham (2004)
John Easton's research focuses on the storage, processing, and display of railway-related datasets. His work emphasizes data representation and exchange through ontologies, integration of multimodal transport data, and cyber security in industrial control systems. He is particularly active in applying blockchain technology to smart ticketing, remote condition monitoring, and secure data sharing in rail environments.
His recent publications (2020–2024) reveal a strong trend toward digital transformation in transportation, with a focus on blockchain-based solutions, data quality in industrial systems, and intelligent transport infrastructures. These works span journals like Transportation Research Record, IET Blockchain, and Journal of Industrial Information Integration, as well as IEEE Big Data and World Congress on Railway Research conferences.
John has received recognition as a Visiting Fellow of the Alan Turing Institute (2022/23). He is also deeply engaged with the rail industry, serving on the GB rail industry’s Data and Information Systems Interface Committee (DISIC) and previously chairing the IET's Railway Technical Network (2018–2021).
He actively contributes to academic and industry discourse by chairing the IET International Conference on Railway Engineering’s European events and organizing workshops at IEEE Big Data conferences in the USA. His work bridges academic research and real-world implementation in the rail sector.
John is a member of the IET Railway Technical and Professional Network (TPN) Executive Team since 2015 and holds professional memberships with IEEE, IET, and the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).
