John E. Seery is the George Irving Thompson Memorial Professor of Government and Professor of Politics at Pomona College, where he has been teaching since 1990. He is a prominent scholar in political theory with deep expertise in democratic theory, the history of political thought, and the role of irony and humor in politics.
His educational background includes a Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, and a B.A. from Amherst College, where he graduated summa cum laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
Seery's research explores foundational questions in political philosophy, including mortality, justice, civil disobedience, feminist politics, and the cultural dimensions of democracy. He has written extensively on figures such as Plato, Marx, Nietzsche, Weber, and Walt Whitman, and his work often bridges literature, art, and political theory—evident in his writings on American Gothic and political comedy.
His recent publications reflect a sustained commitment to liberal arts education, constitutional reform, and innovative pedagogy. Themes across his books include youth political participation, the philosophical underpinnings of higher education, and the ironic structures of political life.

Seery has advised numerous students and contributed significantly to undergraduate education through innovative courses such as Hannah Arendt: Politics, Love, Violence, Gender and Green Political Theory. While specific grant details are not listed, his visiting professorship at Princeton and national awards suggest sustained external recognition and funding. He also contributed to public scholarship through his appearance in the documentary This American Gothic.
Though no formal lab or research team is mentioned, his editorial projects and interdisciplinary approach indicate collaborative scholarly engagement, particularly in bridging political theory with cultural and literary analysis.
